Is your child with ADHD headed to college?
Just 5 percent of students with ADHD will graduate from college, versus 41 percent of their nondisabled peers, according to a 2008 report in the The Journal of Learning says a recent newspaper article I ran across. I suspect the statistics are no better today. The move from high school to college has many challenges and the kids who struggle with disabilities of any form are not as well supported as they should be. Their parents and school systems did much of the advocacy that they now have to shoulder.
What can parents do?
If you have a child with ADHD, or any other disability, make sure you contact the college about what needs to be done to get them the support they need. From test taking accommodations (longer time, quiet room, etc) to assistive technologies. It’s not about getting them an advantage over other students, its about leveling the playing field so they can have their best chance at success.
